The samurai sword is, by far,

However, the truth is that the Samurai Sword was not always suitable for use on
every occasion. A warrior must be prepared for any situation. As such, the Samurai also carried with
them a wide variety of
short arms (or mi-jikai-mono). These short arms were mainly employed for
self-defense, although in the heat of battle what is offense and defense become blurred.
The major advantage of these short-arms were that they could
easily be hidden by the Samurai among their flowing robes, waiting to be
employed in times of need. Some weapons were hidden behind another purpose.
